Feb. 23, 2008

PRINCETON, N.J. - Despite wins from Miranda Ranieri and Logan Greer, as well as valiant efforts from Sarah Toomey and Alia Aziz, Yale dropped a 7-2 decision to Princeton Saturday in the Howe Cup semifinals in New Jersey.

The Bulldogs' top two, rock solid all season, provided Yale's only victories. No. 1 Ranieri defeated Amanda Siebert, 3-1 (6-9, 9-5, 10-8, 9-6) and No. 2 Greer downed Neha Kumar, 3-0 (10-8, 9-2, 9-5).

No. 3 Toomey and No. 4 Aziz nearly sparked Yale with the magic it needed to upset the nation's No. 2 team. Toomey took a 2-1 lead over Jackie Moss, but ended up falling in an epic 3-2 match (7-9, 9-4, 8-10, 9-1, 10-8). Aziz was able to tie her match with Emery Maine at two games apiece after falling behind early, but ended up losing the fifth game, 9-7.

Princeton will take on the No. 1 Penn Quakers tomorrow in the finals at 2:00 p.m. The Bulldogs will play Trinity tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the third-place match. The Bantams lost to the Quakers on Saturday, 5-4.

Tomorrow will be the second time Yale and Trinity square off this season. The Bulldogs defeated the Bantams 6-3 on Jan. 23 in New Haven.
