Ranieri Wins National Individual Title At CSAs

March 2, 2008

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Miranda Ranieri capped off an amazing four-year career at Yale by winning the CSA National Individual title today in Annapolis, Md. Ranieri defeated Kristen Lange of Penn, 3-1 (10-8, 9-5, 5-9, 9-6), to become only the third Yale woman to win a national singles title. Berkeley Belknap (1991) and Michelle Quibell (2004 and 2005) are the only other Yalies to win the Ramsay Cup (Women's A) title at the CSAs.

Ranieri cruised through her Friday matches, defeating Carly Grabowski of Princeton, 3-0 (9-3, 9-2, 9-0) and Trinity's Nayelly Hernandez Perez, 3-0 (9-5, 9-3, 9-2).

Saturday was more of the same, as Ranieri would not drop a game until the final against Lange. She defeated Princeton's Neha Kumar, 3-0 (9-6, 9-7, 9-7) in the quarterfinal match and Trinity's Lauren Polonich, 3-0 (10-9, 9-6, 9-1) in the semifinals.

Lange briefly showed life on Sunday after Ranieri took the first two games, but Yale's captain ensured that the Quaker would play bridesmaid for the second straight year by taking the fourth game, 9-6, and the match.

Freshman Sarah Toomey also had a good showing in her first trip to the CSA individuals, winning the Ramsay Division (Women's A) consolation final over Princeton's Jackie Moss, 3-1 (9-4, 9-3, 1-9, 9-6).
