Former Yale Swimmer Crosses The Strait of Gibraltar
TARIFA, Spain – On the morning of June 21, Marilee Kiernan '09 swam across the Strait of Gibraltar in three hours and 12 minutes, nine minutes short of the current women's world record.
Kiernan departed from Tarifa at 8:04 a.m. and arrived at Punta Almansa, Morocco, at 11:16. Swimming at a rate of four miles per hour, her time was good enough to become the second fastest woman ever to swim the Strait and the new US Women's record holder, according to the Strait of Gibraltar Swim Crossing Association (ACNEG). She also became the fastest woman to accomplish this feat in a neoprene wetsuit.
The former Yale women's breaststroker is training for an attempt at crossing the English Channel.
