Women’s Swimming and Diving Kicks Off Ivy Dual Season Against Columbia
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – This Friday the Yale women's swimming and diving team will see its first conference opponents when the Bulldogs take on the Columbia Lions. This is Yale's only Ivy dual meet on the schedule for the remainder of the calendar year, and it will be a good opportunity for the team to stake a claim in the Ivy League before switching to the championship racing format at Boston University's Terrier Invitational next week and then again at the 2011 AT&T Winter National Championships in December.
Yale has come out on top the past two times the team has seen Columbia. This year's senior class endured a tough 155-145 loss in this matchup at home three years ago, but came back the next year to defeat Columbia 199-101 in New York. The class of 2013 made their debut at this meet two years ago, and Molly Albrecht, Cynthia Tsay and Joan Weaver all had first-place finishes in individual events. Alexandra Forrester finished first in four events, including the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly and as part of the 200-yard medley relay, setting pool records in the latter three. Forrester will be out to lower her own times this year as she returns to where her collegiate racing career began.
Last year the Bulldogs defended their home pool in their season opener against Columbia, defeating the Lions 174-126. Yale won a total of nine swimming events and swept both diving events in Cristina Teuscher's first meet as Robert J.H. Kiphuth Head Coach. Teuscher is a 2000 graduate of Columbia and won 12 Ivy League titles and set 17 school records in her four years as a Lion. This Friday will be her first time returning to her alma mater as head coach of the Bulldogs.
This Friday's meet follows on three successful scrimmages for the Bulldogs. In the past two weeks Yale has raced against McGill, Colgate and Southern Connecticut, each time defending its home pool and building momentum into the official start of the dual racing season. This meet will be Columbia's first outing of the season, but the Lions will likely be coming out of the gate strong. They added 13 freshmen to their roster this year and have two swimmers headed to the 2012 U.S. Olympics Team Trials next summer.
The meet will take place Friday at 5:00 p.m. in Columbia's Uris Pool, located inside Dodge Physical Fitness Center.
