Two Bulldogs Ready for NCAA National Championships
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – This weekend the Yale women's swimming and diving team will have two swimmers competing at the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Freshman Eva Fabian and senior Alexandra Forrester have qualified for what will be Fabian's first NCAA's and Forrester's third. The meet will take place on Mar. 21-23 in Indianapolis, Ind., at the Indiana University Natatorium.
On Thursday Fabian and Forrester will both race in freestyle events. Fabian will swim in the 500-yard freestyle, where she has the 47th fastest time with 4:43.97. This year eight swimmers made the A cut of 4:38.13, the fastest of which comes in at 4:33.07. Also on Thursday Forrester will swim in the 50-yard freestyle, where she is ranked 25th with her time of 22.29 from the prelims at Ivy's. Here the top time in the event is 21.78.
Friday will include Forrester's best event coming into NCAA's, the 100-yard butterfly. With her winning time from the Ivy League Championships she is seeded third in the country. Her time of 51.57 is nearly a whole second faster than her qualifying time of 52.51 from last year. This year's top two times heading into NCAA's belong to two freshmen, those being 51.32 and 51.55. As Forrester finished sixth in this event at NCAA's last year with a time of 51.93, experience will certainly be on her side as she fights for a spot on the podium.
Finally on Saturday Fabian will swim in her best event, the 1,650-yard freestyle. Here she is seeded 18th with a time of 16:09.81. This year six swimmers met the A cut of 16:01.12. Forrester will then close out the meet by swimming the 200-yard butterfly, where she is ranked fourth with a time of 1:54.60 having met the A cut exactly in the prelims at Ivy's.
With Fabian joining Forrester Yale doubles the number of athletes it has competing at NCAA's as compared to the year before when it was just Forrester. A handful of teams have more than 10 individual qualifiers; Georgia has the most with 17, while two-time defending champ Cal Berkeley has 12 qualifiers.
Heats will begin at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m. on each day of competition. A full schedule of events is available here.
