CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Yale women's swimming and diving team finished in fifth place in the Ivy League Championships with 920 points. Despite several strong events, the Bulldogs could not overtake Columbia and Penn, who finished in third and fourth respectively.
For the third consecutive day, junior backstroke specialist Moira McCloskey led the charge for the Bulldogs. McCloskey won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:00.62, beating Harvard's Lindsay Hart by one second. As in previous days, McCloskey was joined in the final of the backstroke event by freshman Brenna Davis. Davis finished fifth in a time of 2:05.06.
In the final of the 100-yard freestyle, Meg Gill finished fifth with a time of 51.58. The event was Gill's third `A' final in as many days. She also raced in the finals for the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.
Elsewhere, junior Kirsten Cartoski finished sixth in the final of the 200-yard breaststroke. Her time of 2:21.71 was her personal best in the event. Also in the 200-yard breaststroke, Marilee Kiernan had another strong showing in the `B' final. She won the race in a time of 2:21.67. Also in the `B' final, Caroline Dowd finished third with a time of 2:23.53.
The evening's first event, the 1650-yard freestyle, was senior Megan Bailey's last race as a Yalie. Bailey finished thirteenth in the event in a time of 17:24.46, adding 14 points to Yale's total.
In the last event of the competition, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Yale team of Gill, Chase Butler, Alexis Mann and McCloskey finished fifth in a time of 3:29.02. They were only beaten into fourth place by Princeton narrowly in a close race.
While Columbia overtook Penn on the last day to move into third place, the teams above Yale in the point standings remained the same as at the close of day two. Hindered by several weak events, the Bulldogs struggled to qualify consistently for the finals.
Princeton won the event with 1580 points, ahead of hosts Harvard who finished with 1445 points. Columbia and Penn finished with 968.5 points and 947 points respectively. Complete Results are available at the meet website.
