After less than three weeks of official practices, and better than one month before the season opens in November, a squad made up predominately of freshmen competed in a pre-season scrimmage at The Connecticut Invitational. The results reflected the composition of the Bulldogs squad that was entered in meet by Head Coach Frank Keefe. The balance of the Yale team, including the divers under new head Diving Coach Ryan Moehnke, remained on campus and practiced.
The results reflected the make of the squad with the Class of 2007 leading the way. Winners included Kirsten Cartoski ('07-Jonesboro,GA) in the 200 Yd. Breaststroke (2:27.03) and Cristina Hession ('07-Little Silver, NJ) in both the 200 Yd. Freestyle (1:54.95) and 200 Yd. Individual Medley (2:10.73). Cristina combined with 3 other freshmen (Chase Butler-Duxbury, MA, Meg Gill-Chester,VA, Moira McCloskey-Ventor, NJ) to win the 400 Yd. Freestyle Relay (3:38.61) at the conclusion of the meet.
Other top finishers were Butler in the 500 Yd. Freestyle (3rd. in 5:14.43), Cartoski in both the 50 Yd. Freestyle and 100 Yd. Breaststroke (2nd. in both events with times of 25.37 & 1:09.63), Gill in the 100 Yd. Butterfly (2nd. in 1:00.27), and McCloskey in both the 200 Yd. Freestyle and 200 Yd. Backstroke (3rd. in both events with times of 1:56.39 & 2:07.17). Sophomore Holly Mazar (Whitby, Ontario) placed second in the 200 Yd. Breaststroke behind Kirsten in 2:32.87.
The Yale Swimmers and Divers will open their official season in November. The Women will be away at Columbia on Friday 11/14, while the Men (along with the Women), will first see action one week later at the University of Maryland Invitational (11/20-22). Both squads will continue pre-season efforts at home with an inter squad Team Qualifier Competition on the weekend of 10/31-11/1 and a scrimmage meet on 11/14 against Southern Connecticut.
