Bulldogs Face Two in Hanover

Jan. 16, 2009

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The women's swimming and diving team head to Hanover, N.H., this weekend for its third dual meet of the season. The Bulldogs will face-off against Ivy League opponents Dartmouth and Penn. The Bulldogs come into the meet 1-1 against Ivy League foes, after beating Cornell last week, but losing to Columbia back in November. Dartmouth comes into the meet 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Ivy League. The Big Green is coming off a 168-132 win over Vermont. Penn, on the other hand, is 1-4 in both dual meets and Ivy League competition. The Quakers are coming off a crushing 207-91 defeat at the hands of Harvard.

The Bulldogs are coming off an Ivy League win over Cornell, but a close defeat to Navy. The Bulldogs handily defeated Cornell by a score of 206-94. The meet with Navy was much closer and came down to the last relay. The Bulldogs needed a first- and third-place finish to clinch the meet, but could only muster a second- and fourth-place finish. Junior Susan Kim won two events for the Bulldogs, while also taken second twice. Sophomore Ileana Lucos provided Yale's only other first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.

If history is any indication, the Bulldogs have a good chance of moving to 3-1 in Ivy League play with wins over both Penn and Dartmouth. Last year, Yale defeated Dartmouth by a score of 225-75, and Penn by a score of 186-114. The Bulldogs lost only three events the entire day. They started out the meet by taking the 200-yard medley relay. The team of sophomore Becca Stern, Kim, junior Andrea Clifford and senior Alexis Mann finished the event in a time of 1:48.15. The Bulldogs took both relays, also winning the 400-yard freestyle relay. That team consisted of junior Laura E Grigereit, Stern, Clifford and Mann. They won the event in a time of 3:35.50.

A number of individuals won events for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Brittany Iacouzze and Lucos were both double event winners. Iacouzze won both distance events for the Bulldogs. In the 1000-yard free she finished in a time of 10:14.80, while in the 500-yard free she touched the wall in a time of 4:59.53. Lucos won both butterfly events for the Bulldogs. In the 200-yard butterfly she won with a time of 2:06.41 and in the 100-yard butterfly her time was 58.89. Yale also won the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 50-yard freestyle, and 200-yard breaststroke. Those events were won by sophomore Annie Killian, senior Marilee Kiernan, Mann and Kim, respectively. Yale also swept the diving with Ali Jones '08 winning the one-meter diving with a score of 239.10 and the three-meter diving with a score of 263.45.

Both the divers and swimmers will compete this Saturday, Jan. 15 at Dartmouth. Competition will begin at Noon.
