FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Bulldogs completed day one at the USTA Invitational with great success as they won 10 of 14 matches Saturday. Two Yale singles players advanced to the semifinals thus far and two Yale doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective draws.
In the ‘C’ Flight Singles draw, sophomore Stephanie Kent won two matches to advance to the semifinals. In the round of sixteen, Kent defeated Julija Korshunova 6-4, 6-1. Kent then rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Yulia Smirnova in the quarterfinals.
In the ‘F’ Flight Singles draw, senior captain Sarah Lederhandler advanced to the semifinals with two victories Saturday. Lederhandler defeated Taysha Blessington 6-2, 6-2 in the round of sixteen. In the quarterfinals, Lederhandler cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Daniella DePaoli.
In the ‘A’ Flight Doubles draw, Kent and sophomore Vicky Brook defeated the No. 4 seed 8-5. The doubles team of Lederhandler and fellow senior Jessica Rhee won 8-7 (2) in the round of sixteen of the ‘C’ Flight Doubles.
