NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Sarah Lederhandler and junior Stevi Petrelli capped off a successful day at the Wilson / ITA Northeast Regionals with two singles’ victories for the Bulldogs Saturday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. The first day of the Yale-hosted tournament saw Yale players and doubles teams go a perfect 7-0.
Lederhandler defeated Princeton’s Taylor Marable 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the round of 128 to advance to the round of 64. Lederhandler will face the No. 2 seed in the tournament Harvard’s Holly Cao Sunday.
Petrelli won her singles match in straight sets as well. The junior defeated Seton Hall’s Elizabeth Verow 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the round of 64. She will face the No. 17 seeded Olga Khmylev of Boston College Sunday.
Earlier Saturday, all three Yale doubles teams advanced to the round of 16.
The No. 7 seeded doubles team of sophomores Vicky Brook and Stephanie Kent received a bye to the round 32. In the round of 32, the duo defeated Harvard’s Samantha Gridley and Alexandra Lehman 8-2 to advance to the round of 16.
The No. 9 seeded doubles team of freshman Elizabeth Epstein and junior Stevi Petrelli defeated Boston University’s Jessi Linero and Petra Santini 8-3 in the round of 64. Epstein and Petrelli then defeated Malissa Gilanchi and Zoe Taylor of Hofstra 8-4 to advance to the round of 16.
Seniors Sarah Lederhandler and Jessica Rhee combined to win two matches Saturday. In the round of 64, the duo rolled to an 8-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson’s Elmine Botes and Julija Korsunova. The senior doubles team then squeezed out a 9-7 victory over No. 9 seeded Jen Holzberg and Amy Zhang of Rutgers.
All three doubles teams will be back in action at 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
