New Haven, Conn. – The historic ride for the doubles team of junior Vicky Brook and senior Lindsay Clark will continue Thursday morning, when the duo begins play at the 2010 USTA/ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships.
The pair became the first-ever Yale tennis players to qualify for the Championships by winning the doubles tournament at Northeast Regionals on Oct. 26. The No. 2-seeded Bulldogs upset Princeton's No. 1-seeded Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable 8-3.
Clark credits the team's remarkable run to the dedication and hard work put in over the course of the season.
"I think Vicky and I were so successful at Regionals because we not only played a consistent high-level of doubles, but had an unwavering resolve to make sure we got the job done."
According to Clark, strong chemistry with her playing partner also benefited the teammates, who have been playing doubles together for two years.
"[We] wanted to make this last year as memorable as possible. I think this strong desire to see just how good we can get, and how far we can make it on the national stage, has fueled us in doing so well this fall."
The Championships will provide a test for the pair, who will be one of 16 doubles teams vying for a national title. Clark is not about to make any predictions, saying only that if the team keeps up its current level of play "who knows what can happen." It's safe to say that both players are looking forward to the opportunity, along with their coach and teammates.
The pair will take the courts at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Thursday at 9 a.m. for the opening round of play.
