Yale Coaches Win Regional Outreach Award
New Haven, Conn. - Head coach of men's tennis Alex Dorato and head coach of women's tennis Danielle McNamara have been named as recipients of the 2010 USTA/ITA Campus and Community Outreach Award for the New England region.
The award honors collegiate coaches who provide a leadership role in promoting, organizing or participating in campus and community tennis programming that encourage tennis participation and that support the different USTA youth and community programs.
Both the men's and women's tennis teams have been involved in promoting tennis through the USTA/ITA Campus Showdown's and Campus Kid's Day initiatives over the past few years. This year the men's team will host a Campus Showdown on Saturday, January 15th and a Campus Kid's Day on Saturday, March 12th.
This is the fourth year of the men's and women's teams' community outreach program, New Haven Tennis Outreach (NHTO). NHTO is a youth mentorship program for students in grades 3-12. The program is directed towards children from low-income families who otherwise would not have access to high-quality academic guidance or athletic instruction. The coaches and student-athletes from the Yale tennis teams mentor the program's students weekly during the academic year, providing consistent tennis lessons and one-on-one academic tutoring.
The varsity tennis teams also support Yale Athletics department outreach initiatives including Bulldog Buddies Mentoring Program and the Holiday Gift Giving Initiative.
The Outreach Award signifies the strides made by the Yale tennis program, not just on the courts, but in the New Haven community as well.
