No. 28 Yale Sweeps Doubleheader Against Quinnipiac and FDU
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sunday, the No. 28 Yale women's tennis team beat both the Quinnipiac and Fairleigh Dickinson teams in a doubleheader at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
First, the Bulldogs took on the Quinnipiac squad in what ended up being a 7-0 blowout. Yale took the day without dropping a set, using only six players and mixing up the normal rotations. Junior Stephanie Kent and freshman Annie Sullivan played in the top doubles spot, freshmen Kim Szokol and Blair Seideman played second, and senior Silia DeFilippis and sophomore Elizabeth Epstein played in the third spot, all winning their matches handily.
On the singles side, Epstein played first, followed by Seideman, Kent, Sullivan, Szokol, and DeFilippis. All won in straight sets, with the only close part of the match coming in Kent's first set, which she ended up winning 7-5.
After dispatching the Quinnipiac team, the Bulldogs had to recover quickly for the match against Fairleigh Dickinson, in which they again used a different lineup than will be featured once Ivy League play begins next weekend. Yale took the first point of the match with a dominant doubles performance, as junior Vicky Brook and senior Lindsay Clark won in the top spot in a close match, then got easy wins from Epstein and Sullivan in the second spot and Seideman and Szokol in the third spot.
In singles, Yale captured four of the six matches to win 5-2 overall, with wins by Epstein in the second spot, Seideman third, Sullivan in the fifth spot, and Szokol in the sixth spot. Brook dropped her match at number one in three sets, and senior captain Stevi Petrelli dropped her match when she retired with a one set lead.
The Bulldogs have matches next Friday and Saturday on the road at Penn and No. 55 Princeton as Ivy League play begins. Going in, Yale holds the highest national ranking and is favored to be the best team in the Ivies, but that ranking will be meaningless if it isn't supported by results.
