No. 29 Yale Defeats Penn to Open Ivy League Season
PHILADELPHIA – Friday, the No. 29 Yale women's tennis team opened the Ivy League season with a commanding 5-2 victory over the University of Pennsylvania.
The Penn squad offered a strong number one in No. 23 Connie Hsu, but the Bulldogs had the depth to overcome that advantage. In doubles, the Yale squad of freshmen Kim Szokol and Blair Seideman took the first match in the number three spot 8-3. That was followed by a 9-7 win by Hsu and her partner Alexa Ely at number one, which made the match at the number two spot between the Yale team of junior Steph Kent and freshman Annie Sullivan the deciding match for the first point of the match. Yale triumphed, 8-3, to capture the early advantage.
Next, the Bulldogs started off singles with a straight-set win from Sullivan. After Hsu brought the match back within striking distance with a 6-4, 6-1 win, Yale pulled away with wins by sophomore Elizabeth Epstein, Seideman and Kent to secure the victory. Later, Sullivan secured a victory at the fifth spot.
The win sets up Yale for a significant match with No. 56 Princeton Saturday that will set up an early leader in the chase for the Ivy League title and the automatic NCAA tournament berth that comes with it.
