No. 26 Yale Wins 6-1 Over Rutgers

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Friday, the Yale women's tennis team, ranked No. 26, handily defeated unranked Rutgers by a score of 6-1. 

With the victory, the team improved to 12-3 on the season.  Yale also extended its excellent record in doubles, winning their 14th doubles point in 15 matches.   At No. 1, the combination of senior Vicky Brook and freshman Amber Li topped Jennifer Holzberg and Vanessa Petrini 9-8 (2).  Next up, at No. 2, the No. 61 ranked pairing of junior Elizabeth Epstein and sophomore Annie Sullivan took their match 9-7 over Morgan Ivey and Lindsay Balsamo.  Finally, in the third spot, senior captain Steph Kent and sophomore Blair Seideman combined to knock off Noor Judeh and Stefania Balasa 8-2.

In singles, the team wasted no time in extending its lead.  Playing at No. 5, Sullivan was the first to finish, knocking off Balsamo by a score of 6-2, 6-1.  Next, Brook won at No. 4 and Li took her match at No. 6 simultaneously, clinching the match victory and putting Yale ahead 4-0.  Brook won 6-4, 6-4 against Balasa, and Li took her match 6-4, 6-1 over Judeh.  With the match already won, Epstein continued piling on at No. 1, topping Petrini 6-3, 6-3 to put Yale up 5-0.  At No. 3, Kent played a tight match against Ivey.  Ivey won the first set 6-3, but Kent battled back in the second, winning 6-2.  In the match-deciding tiebreaker, Ivey proved too much and won 10-6, giving Rutgers its first and only victory.  Finally, at No. 2, Seideman and Holzberg split the first two sets, with Seideman taking the first set 6-3 and dropping the second 7-6 (5).  With the match on the line Seideman won 10-6 in a tiebreak to end the match with Yale on top 6-1. 

Next Friday, Yale will kick off the Ivy League season with a match against Penn, then continue the intra-league competition on Saturday with a match against Princeton.
