Hamilton Wins at No. 1
OXFORD, Miss. – Monday the No. 28 Yale women's tennis team lost 4-1 to No. 25 Vanderbilt in the championship match of Ole Miss's ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Bulldogs reached the finals of the four-team tournament after defeating hosts No. 19 Ole Miss on Sunday. Vanderbilt took down No. 27 Illinois to earn their spot in the finals.
Monday's match got off to a slow start for the Bulldogs, with the usually strong duo of senior captain Elizabeth Epstein and junior Blair Seideman falling 8-1 to Frances Altick and Georgina Sellyn at No. 3 doubles. Yale's top doubles pair, freshman Madeleine Hamilton and junior Annie Sullivan, also took a loss, handing the doubles point to the Commodores.
Yale faced similar challenges at the top of the singles order. While Madeleine Hamilton, currently ranked No. 90 nationally, battled to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Marie Casares at No. 1, No. 42 Elizabeth Epstein and No. 31 Blair Seideman each fell in two sets at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, to give the Commodores a 3-1 lead.
With the match on the line, Vanderbilt needed only one win in the bottom half of the order to seal the deal. That win came at No. 4, where sophomore Hanna Yu took Georgina Sellyn to three sets but eventually conceded the point, losing 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Annie Sullivan's match at No. 5 and sophomore Amber Li's match at No. 6 went unfinished.
The Bulldogs will return to action Friday, when they host Florida International at 5 p.m. in the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
