Hamilton and Sullivan Cruise to Victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. With day two of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals completed, two of Yale's three doubles pairs remain in contention. The No. 16 seeded pair, sophomore Madeleine Hamilton and senior captain Annie Sullivan, and the No. 8 seeded pair, sophomore Ree Ree Li and freshman Sherry Li, each won two matches to advance to the round of 16.

Hamilton and Sullivan began the day against Ivy opponents Ioana Alecsui and Tiana Takenaga but faced few challenges from the Columbia pair, defeating them 8-2. Their next match brought more success, as the Bulldogs took down Boston College's Emily Safron and Heini Salonen 8-0. Hamilton and Sullivan will face Jacqueline Crawford and Suzy Tan of Dartmouth in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Ree Ree Li and Sherry Li also opened the tournament with a win over Ivy league opponents, defeating Princeton's Joan Cannon and Emily Hahn 8-5. The Bulldog pair reached the round of 16 by defeating Sarah Bowen and Carmen Pestano of Hofstra 8-3 in the subsequent round. When doubles play resumes Sunday, they will meet with Amy He and Spencer Liang, who represent the host school, Harvard.

Yale's third doubles pair, freshman Caroline Lynch and junior Hanna Yu, had a tough matchup in the first round, falling to No. 2 seeded Sol Eskenazi and Jaime Yapp-Shing of Penn.

Saturday will be devoted to the tournament's singles action, with doubles resuming on Sunday. Five Bulldogs will compete in the main draw, as Lynch, who received a berth in the qualifying bracket, was eliminated following a loss in three sets to Hofstra's Louise Lopez. All five Bulldogs have byes in the first round.
