MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Illinois edged the No. 36 Yale women's tennis team 4-3 Saturday evening at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, taking the doubles point and three singles matches for the win.
Both teams were coming off losses in the first round of the tournament, as Yale fell to No. 21 Texas Tech 4-1 and Illinois fell to No. 14 Alabama 4-0. The Fighting Illini grabbed a 1-0 lead on the Bulldogs Saturday by taking a pair of doubles matches, at No. 1 and No. 3. Freshman Sherry Li and sophomore Hanna Yu saw their match at No. 2 go unfinished.
Four of the six singles matches ended in straight sets, with Yale claiming wins at No. 3 and No. 4 from sophomore Ree Ree Li and freshman Sherry Li. While senior captain Annie Sullivan was able to deliver a three-set win at No. 2, the final result ultimately hinged on the No. 1 spot. There, Illinois' Allison Falkin won a third set tiebreaker 11-9 over sophomore Madeleine Hamilton to seal a 4-3 victory for the Fighting Illini.
Yale finishes the tournament on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. CST with a match vs. Tulane. Illinois will advance to the finals of the consolation bracket, where they meet No. 29 Oklahoma State. Elsewhere in the tournament, No. 21 Texas Tech will square off against No. 14 Alabama, the tournament hosts, in the finals.
