NEW HAVEN, Conn. —Friday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center the No. 52-ranked Yale women's tennis team faced a setback in the opening of their Ivy League season. The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead but ultimately fell 4-3 to Princeton.
Yale, the three-time defending Ivy champion, took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Sophomore Madeleine Hamilton and freshman Sherry Li combined for a close victory at the top spot, while sophomore Ree Ree Li and junior Hanna Yu had an easier time at No. 2. Freshman Courtney Amos and senior captain Annie Sullivan were on the edge of a victory as their match was called.
Heading into singles with a 1-0 lead, the Bulldogs capitalized quickly to move ahead 3-0. Sullivan defeated the nation's No. 84 player, Alanna Wolff, at No. 3 by a score of 6-1, 6-2, and Ree Ree Li followed up with a two-set win at No. 4. While a victory for the Bulldogs was well within reach, the remaining four matches all went to Brown. Freshman Caroline Lynch and Hamilton were the last two to fall, as both of their matches went to three sets.
The Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Penn.
