NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Saturday at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center the No. 52-ranked Yale women's tennis team defeated Penn 4-3 to even its Ivy record. The Bulldogs (9-8, 1-1 Ivy) got the win after a disappointing opening loss to Princeton on Friday.
Yale took the doubles point for the second time this weekend, with comfortable wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Sophomore Courtney Amos and senior captain Annie Sullivan, who had their match at No. 3 go unfinished Friday, were able to finish things off quickly Saturday, defeating their opponents 8-2. Sophomore Ree Ree Li and junior Hanna Yu had the other win at No. 2.
Moving onto singles play with a 1-0 lead, the Bulldogs split matches with the Quakers to edge their opponents 4-3. At No. 1, sophomore Madeleine Hamilton battled through three long sets against Sol Eskenazi but eventually conceded the point. The Bulldogs swept at Nos. 2 through 4, where Yu, Sullivan and Ree Ree Li, respectively, all earned two-set wins. Yu took both of her sets 7-5.
The Bulldogs will take to the road next weekend, with matches Saturday and Sunday at Cornell and No. 36 Columbia. Sunday's will be a grudge match for the Bulldogs, who shared the Ivy title with Columbia last season. The Lions are currently the highest-ranked Ivy League team.
