Battaglia, Jiang, Li, Shklover and Zordani Advance
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships Presented by Oracle, the Yale women's tennis team had a successful first day of play on its home courts. One doubles team advanced to the Round of 16, while five Bulldogs advanced to the Round of 64.
Newly formed doubles pair of junior Valerie Shklover and freshman Madison Battaglia slid past Seton Hall's Katie Kim and Thandy Kangwa 8-5 to move on to the Round of 32. Shklover and Battaglia then encountered some trouble in their match against Cornell's Marika Cusick and Alexandra D'Ascenzo. While Cusick and D'Ascenzo overcame Yale's doubles team at the Bulldog Invitational two weeks ago, Shklover and Battaglia fought through a tight match to defeat the Cornell pair 8-7(3).
Senior captain Tina Jiang and junior Elizabeth Zordani also faced a close match against Boston University's Sabrina Faybyshev and Barbara Rodriguez but were ultimately defeated by their counterparts 8-7(5).
Nevertheless, Jiang and Zordani both advanced to the next round in singles, as did Battaglia and Shklover. While Jiang and Battaglia both had byes, Zordani and Shklover each competed in a match to move on to the next round. Zordani dropped only two games in dismantling Lehigh's Sibel Can 6-0, 6-2. In her match against Cornell's Ananya Dua, Shklover had to power through a close first set that went to the tiebreak before cruising to a 6-0 second set win for a final score of 7-6, 6-0. Shklover's victory marks her second win of the season against Dua after her 6-2, 6-1 victory at the Bulldog Invitational.
To top off Yale's day of success, senior Sherry Li pulled through an intensely close match against St. John's University's Olaya Inclan Solis. While each set went to the tiebreak, Li put away both sets to win the match in straight sets 7-6(5), 7-6(3).
The Bulldogs return to the courts on Saturday at 9 a.m. to compete in the next rounds of the ITA Regional Championships.
