NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The Yale women's tennis team got Ivy League play started out with a bang, as their match against Ivy League rivals Brown went the distance, even though the Bulldogs came out on the losing side. The teams matched up well coming in and a tight match was not surprising at all.

The Bulldogs started out on the right foot by seizing the doubles point. Samantha Martinelli and Elizabeth Zordani continued their excellent play as a tandem with a 6-2 win before Brown rallied with a 6-2 set of their own in No. 2 doubles. Caroline Amos and Lauren Gillinov took care of business, however, winning the No. 3 match 6-4.

Singles is where things started to turn; the Bears won the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 matches in straight sets including a tight 6-3, 7-6(5) loss for senior Valerie Skhlover. The Bulldogs started to fight back, with Amy Yang winning her No. 2 singles match 6-4, 7-5. Zordani continued the rally, winning her match 7-6, 4-6, 7-6(3), gutting things out in a tense third set tiebreak.

With the score on the day level at 3-3, all eyes were on the No. 1 match between first-year Martinelli and senior Alyza Benotto. After winning the first set 6-3, Martinelli was looking to close things out. Tied at 5-5 in the second set, Benotto found her way to a break and for the second straight match, Martinelli would be playing in a decisive third set. It was a high-quality ending, with both players exchanging blows until each had won six games; ultimately the experience of Benotto triumphed, as she pulled out the win in the deciding tiebreak 7-4.

Although a great afternoon of tennis ended with a loss, the Bulldogs have many positives to draw from going into their next matchup, when they face Dartmouth in Hanover, NH on Friday, April 6th.
