NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldog Invitational wrapped up on Sunday afternoon with the Yale women's tennis team eking out Ivy League rivals Brown. The two teams won an equal number of singles matches, but the Bulldogs pulled ahead in the overall total with more doubles wins.
Samantha Martinelli and Jessie Gong won their doubles match 6-3 out of the No. 1 spot; they were follwed by Caroline Dunleavy and Raissa Lou, who won 7-5. Lauren Gillinov and Kathy Wang also won by a score of 6-3, giving the Bulldogs three doubles wins to the Bears' four.
Singles were extremely close, with all of Yale's losses being a coin flip. Martinelli won the first set before dropping the last two by identical 6-4 scores against Brown's No. 1 player. Gillinov lost in two sets, but both by the score of 7-5. Amy Yang lost in a deciding set, ending her comeback attempt after dropping the first set. Dunleavy, Lou and Gong, however, all won in straight sets. Lou has been especially impressive this weekend, winning all three of her matches in straight sets without losing more than three games in any set.
Overall, this weekend was definitely a positive one for the Bulldogs. They were able to navigate three difficult matches relatively well, protecting their home turf in the process. While none of the fall matches count towards their national championship hopes, the matchplay presents an excellent opportunity for the team to find its identity.
The Bulldogs are back in action on October 11th at the ITA Northeast Regionals.
