Bulldogs Excel in First Match of Season

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale women's tennis team kicked off the official start to their season with a bang, beating the Fordham Rams 7-0 in a Friday night matchup.

The Bulldogs won the doubles point right out of the gate with 6-1 victories in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Swensen-McMahon Head Coach of Women's Tennis Danielle McNamara tried out new pairings with great success, with Jessie Gong and Samantha Martinelli teaming up while Caroline Dunleavy and Raissa Lou also joined forces. Caroline Amos and Kathy Wang won their match 7-5 for good measure, giving the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead on the afternoon.

Singles was dominated by the Bulldogs from start to finish. Martinelli was able to power through a tough matchup against Fordham's No 1. Arina Taluyenko, who was nationally ranked coming into the matchup. She closed out a tight first set 7-5 before closing out the second 6-3 to hand her team a 2-0 lead. From there, the Bulldogs did not drop a single set; Dunleavy, Gillinov, Gong, Lou and Wang all closed out their opponents in straight sets to shutout the Rams 7-0.

Yale continues their weekend in Boston on Sunday against BC. Play begins at 2:00pm.
