Bulldogs Split Matches on Day Two of Blue Gray Tennis Classic

Montgomery, Ala.- The Yale women's tennis team wrapped up Day Two of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic with a pair of matches; the first resulted in the Bulldogs on the losing end of a tight one against the University of Alabama, losing 4-2 with most matches coming down to the wire. They bounced back later in the day with a 4-2 victory over Fresno State to finish the tournament in 7th place.

Doubles play set the tone for what would be a tight match with Alabama. The Crimson Tide took the No. 3 match, before Caroline Dunleavy and Raissa Lou bounced back to win in the No. 2 spot. With the doubles point on the line, Jessie Gong and Samantha Martinelli won a tight 6-4 match to give the Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.

Alabama quickly tied the score with a straight sets victory in the No. 4 singles match. Martinelli gave the lead right back to the Bulldogs with a three set victory, coming back from an early deficit. The Crimson Tide won the next three matches from there, however, winning in the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 matches. The latter two went to three sets, but with Gong and Kathy Wang unable to win their deciding sets. Amy Yang was also in a third set before hers ended early.

A few hours after their loss to Alabama, Yale was right back on the court for a consolation match against Fresno St in a Bulldogs vs Bulldogs match. Fresno got off to an early 1-0 lead after taking the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles points in tight matches, both of which were decided by one break.

Fresno State continued that momentum with a victory in the No. 5 singles match. From there on out, however, it was all Yale. Dunleavy, Gong, Martinelli, and Yang each won their matchups in straight sets to give the Bulldogs four singles wins and a victory on the afternoon.
