No. 18 Michigan Shuts No. 72 Yale Out 7-0

Feb. 8, 2009

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - No. 72 Yale dropped to 4-1 this season after losing to No. 18 Michigan Sunday 7-0 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Bulldogs won a doubles match in the loss against Michigan.

The match served as a homecoming of sorts for Yale head coach Danielle Lund McNamara, who helped Michigan to its first Big Ten Championship in 1997 as a player before coming to Yale and leading the Bulldogs to an Ivy League title last season.

The Bulldogs fought hard in the doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Lauren Ritz and Lindsay Clark pulled out an 8-6 victory over Lindsey Howard and Denise Muresan. Yale almost took another doubles victory at No. 1 doubles, but senior Janet Kim and junior Jessica Rhee dropped a 9-8 (2) decision to Chisako Sugiyama and Tania Mahtani, the No. 51 ranked doubles team in the country.

Freshman Vicky Brook took the lone singles set for Yale at No. 3 singles. Brook lost her match 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (6) to Whitney Taney.

The loss came on the heels of a big 4-3 victory Saturday against No. 54 Western Michigan.

McNamara captained Michigan as a junior and senior, was All-Big Ten in 1999 and was the Big Ten Sportswoman of the Year in 2001. She is the only player in Michigan history to qualify for all three Grand Slam collegiate events (All-American, National Indoors and the NCAA Championships).

These two matches start a long stretch of matches on the road for the Bulldogs, who will not play at home again until March 21. These two matches also mark the first of five road matches against ranked opponents for Yale.

Next weekend, the Bulldogs will compete at the ECAC Championships in Hanover, N.H.
