PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bulldogs opened their season Friday with the first day of the Cissie Leary Tournament at the University of Pennsylvania. The tournament is divided into three singles draws and two doubles draws.
In the Blue Bracket singles draw, defending Cissie Leary Invitational winner senior Janet Kim, this year's No. 1 seed, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory to advance to the quarterfinals. Junior Jessica Rhee pulled out a 6-7 (5), 6-3, (10-6) victory to advance to the second round of the Blue Bracket as well.
In the Blue Bracket doubles draw, No. 1 seed Kim and sophomore Lindsay Clark advanced to the semifinals with an 8-3 victory over John and Duboc of Cornell in the quarterfinals.
Petrelli and Brook advanced to the semifinals as well in the Blue Bracket doubles draw. In the round of 16, Petrelli and Brook rolled to an 8-3 win over Murray and Suda of Columbia. The duo then defeated Cao and Peterzan of Harvard in the quarterfinals 8-6.
In other action, sophomore Lauren Ritz and Clark dropped matches in the Blue Bracket singles draw to the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively.
Junior Sarah Lederhandler dropped her round of 16 match in the red bracket singles draw.
The doubles team of Rhee and Lederhandler dropped their first round doubles match in the Red Bracket doubles draw before pulling out an 8-4 victory in the consolation semifinals.
Yale players will resume play Saturday at the Cissie Leary Invitational.
