Bulldogs Complete Competition at USTA Invite

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The Bulldogs concluded play at the USTA Invite Monday with victories in the singles III, singles V, and singles VI draws by sophomore Lindsay Clark, sophomore Lauren Ritz, and freshman Vicky Brook, respectively.

After beginning the tournament by winning 23 of 24 matches, Yale had players in the semifinals in the singles I, II, III, IV, V and VI draws. In the singles I draw, senior Janet Kim lost a 7-6, 6-2 match to Bianca Aboubakare of Brown in the semifinals.

Junior Jessica Rhee cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lynne Poggensee-Wei of Iowa in the semifinals of the singles II draw, but Rhee dropped a 7-5, 6-1 match to Brown's Cassie Herzber in the finals.

Clark pulled out a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Boston College's Lauren Cash in the semifinals of the singles III draw. The sophomore then rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Sheri Olivier of Texas A&M in the finals to claim victory in the bracket.

In the singles IV draw, sophomore Stevi Petrelli dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match to Katarina Gajic of Boston College in the semifinals.

Ritz won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 over Ashley Turpin of Texas A&M in the semifinals of the singles V draw. Ritz then won the bracket with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tatiana Ganzha of Purdue in the bracket finals.

Both Brook and junior Sarah Lederhandler competed in the singles VI draw. They both won their semifinal matches in straight sets. Brook defeated Remi Martin of Purdue 6-4, 6-3 and Lederhandler won 7-6, 6-4 over N.C. State's Diana Mortlock.

Brook defeated Lederhandler 6-1, 6-1 in the finals of the singles VI bracket to win the bracket.

Senior captain Lilian Nguyen won her consolation match against Purdue's Kirsten Magi in the singles VII bracket.

In doubles action, the team of Clark and Kim dropped its quarterfinal match in the doubles I bracket, but then won the consolation match 8-2.

The duo of Brook and Ritz won their quarterfinals match in the doubles II draw 8-3, but dropped an 8-3 decision in the semifinals.

Petrelli and Rhee lost their quarterfinals match in the doubles III draw. The duo followed up their loss with an 8-4 win in a consolation match.

In the doubles IV draw, Lederhandler and Nguyen rolled to an 8-1 victory in the quarterfinals before dropping their semifinals match 8-2.
