  • Yale Individuals and Team Named USTFCCCA All-Academic

    Yale Individuals and Team Named USTFCCCA All-Academic Several members of the Yale women's track and field team were named to the national All-Academic team by the USTFCCCA. Eligible athletes are those who have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and qualify on the track in either the indoor or the outdoor season. For the indoor qualification, athletes must have finished the season ranked nationally in the top 96 of an individual event or of the top 48 of a relay event. Outdoors, an athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Championship meets, including regional preliminaries. In total, 676 student-athletes from 171 institutions were named to the team.

    Kate Grace '11 Advances to 1,500-Meter Run Semis at Olympic Trials Yale's Kate Grace '11 has advanced to the semifinals in the 1,500-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials thanks to her performance in Thursday night's heats. Grace's time of 4:17.65 placed her seventh in her heat. The top six finishers in each of the three heats advanced to the semifinals automatically; then, the runners with the next six best times from all heats advanced. Grace was the 24th and final qualifier for the semis, which take place on Friday at 3:45 p.m. Pacific (6:45 p.m. Eastern). The finals (12 athletes) are Sunday, July 1 at 4:23 p.m. Pacific time (7:23 p.m. Eastern). All events are at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.

    Kate Grace ’11 Concludes Competition at Olympic Trials Yale's Kate Grace '11 finished 20th in the semifinals of the 1,500-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Friday afternoon at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. Her time of 4:12.92 left her slightly more than two seconds away from one of the 12 spots in Sunday’s finals. Grace’s run at the Trials thus comes to an end, as earlier in the meet she placed 20th in the heats of the 800-meter run with a 2:04.28 -- missing out on the semifinals in that event by less than a second.

    Kate Grace '11 Finishes 20th in First Round of 800 Competition at Olympic Trials Yale's Kate Grace '11 finished 20th in the first round of competition in the 800-meter run Friday night at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. Grace's time of 2:04.28 left her less than a second away from advancing to Saturday's semifinals. The top three in each of the four heats advanced, along with the next four best times.

    Kate Grace ’11 to Compete at U.S. Olympic Team Trials Kate Grace ’11, Yale’s record-setting track star, will compete for a spot in the upcoming Olympics at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials starting this week in Eugene, Ore., at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. The first round of competition (32 athletes) in Grace’s signature event, the 800-meter run, takes place at 5:00 p.m. Pacific time (8:00 p.m. Eastern) on Friday. She will also compete in the 1,500 meter run, with the qualifying round in that event (30 athletes) scheduled for 3:50 p.m. Pacific time (6:50 p.m. Eastern) on Thursday, June 28.

    Spring Academic All-Ivy Announced The Ivy League has released its list of student-athletes selected for 2011-12 Academic All-Ivy honors in its spring sports, and 10 Yale student athletes were recognized. The 10 men and women were starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages. Each Ivy institution nominated five men and women from its eligible student-athletes.

    Garry Finishes Fifth in Steeplechase at U.S. Junior Nationals Rising sophomore Kira Garry (Montauk, N.Y.) was back on the track Friday night, less than two weeks after setting the school record in the steeplechase. Garry competed in the U.S. Junior National Championships at Indiana University, finishing fifth with a time of 10:57.39.

    Chapman Competes at NCAA Regionals The final race of the Bulldogs' track and field season occurred on Saturday night, when sophomore Melissa Chapman competed in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA East Regional at the University of North Florida. Chapman finished in 22nd place of 44 runners. Her time of 16:43.86 was good for 11th place in her heat. Dartmouth's Abbey D'Agostino, an All-American in the event at the 2011 NCAA Championships, won the heat in 16:15.35. D'Agostino has run the second-fastest time in the country this season.

    Three Bulldogs Earn All-East Distinction Three Yale middle distance runners were awarded All-East accolades for their standout performances at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association (ECAC) Championships this weekend at Princeton. Juniors Nihal Kayali and Elizabeth Marvin and senior Lindsey Raymond scored a total of nine points for the Bulldogs, leading Yale to a 31st-place finish.

    Rue Voted Captain of Women’s Track and Field Junior Allison Rue was chosen by her teammates for the office of captain of the Yale women’s track and field team for the 2012-2013 season. Rue is among the Bulldogs’ most versatile athletes, competing at every distance from the 200-meter dash to the 800-meter run, though she has tended to specialize in the 400-meter dash this year.

The team presented three Bulldogs with awards.

The team's distance runners stole the show, with three top-five finishes on the day. Cornell took all the drama out of the team title, finishing first with 158 points to second-place Princeton's 134.

    Two Score on First Day of Heps On the first day of competition at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, the Yale women's track and field team garnered six points to sit in sixth place overall. The Bulldogs are tied with host Penn in sixth place and Dartmough has four points in eighth place. The team title is hotly contested after day one, with Cornell (39 points) barely edging Brown (38 points) so far. Only six events have been scored, since most of the day consisted of preliminary heats, with finals taking place tomorrow. Two Bulldogs scored points for the team competition, and one more advanced to tomorrow's finals.

    Bulldogs to Compete at Heps This Weekend After many of the Yale women’s track and field team’s top athletes competed at the Penn Relays and the Yale Springtime Invitational last weekend, reaching a number of season and personal bests, they will return to Philadelphia this Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. The Bulldogs will try to redeem an eighth-place finish at the 2011 Heps, a feat that looks increasingly possible given the team’s renewed depth.

    Bulldogs Conclude Regular Season with Springtime Invitational As part of the regular season finale, the Yale women’s track and field team hosted the Yale Springtime Invitational on Sunday as a last tune-up before the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships on May 5-6. The Bulldogs competed against a number of regional teams and turned in several personal and season bests to close out a weekend that also included competition at the Penn Relays.

    Three Top-10 Finishes at Penn Relays The Yale women’s track and field team participated in the historic Penn Relays on Friday, turning in three top-10 finishes across five events. Sophomore Emily Urciuoli started off the day for the Bulldogs, competing in the college women’s pole vault championship. She finished in a three-way tie for 16th at a height of 3.5m (11’5.75”), along with Bianca Reo of Princeton and Jillian Hart of host Penn. The field was 23 athletes deep.

    Storied Penn Relays on Tap This Weekend Members of the Yale women’s track and field team will venture to Philadelphia this week to compete in the 2012 Penn Relays. The relay carnival will showcase college talent from across the country, and will also include field events, as well as professional and high school heats. Yale will send 14 representatives to wear the Bulldog jersey on Thursday and Friday. Additionally, Yale will host the Springtime Invitational at the Cuyler Athletic Complex and Dwyer Track on Sunday.

    Track and Field to Travel to Larry Ellis Invitational The Yale women’s track and field team returns to New Jersey this Friday and Saturday to compete in the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton. The Bulldogs competed at Princeton’s Sam Howell Invitational earlier this month. More than 30 teams will compete over the course of the weekend, including schools from as far as New Hampshire, Rhode Island and West Virginia. Additionally, each Ivy League school will send a squad, giving Yale a chance to preview where it might place during Heps next month.

    Cantabs Edge Bulldogs in Closest HY Meet in Several Seasons The Yale women's track team put up a valiant fight against Harvard on Saturday and compiled 73 points, a greater total than in many recent seasons. The effort was almost enough to topple the Crimson, but Harvard escaped with a 89-73 win in Boston. The Bulldogs won seven events, claimed second in ten and swept one event on the day. The 2012 HY contest was the closest since Yale last beat Harvard in 2007.

    Gamble and Kayali Post Strong Showings in 800-Meter Run After dominating in the 1,500-meter run on Friday in the Raleigh Relays, juniors Annelies Gamble and Nihal Kayali came back to run impressive times in the 800-meter run on Saturday. Gamble claimed eighth of 25 athletes, finishing in 2:09.93, while Kayali posted a time of 2:11.50, a collegiate best, to finish in 12th place.

The meet was unscored and gave the Bulldogs a chance to gauge their training this far in the season.

    Track and Field to Compete in Connecticut and North Carolina This Weekend After a trip to California kicked off the outdoor track season over spring break, the Yale women’s track and field team will compete outdoors back east for the first time in 2012 on Mar. 31. The Bulldogs will compete against regional teams such as Brown, Hartford, Rhode Island, Southern Connecticut and the host Huskies in the UConn Spring Invite. Additionally, five members of the team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the national Raleigh Relays, sponsered by Adidas, from Mar. 30-31. The meet will be unscored, giving the team a chance to see how its training is progressing without worrying about a team score.

    Yale Competes in Northridge Invitational Five members of the Yale women's track and field team competed at the Calfornia State Univeresity at Northridge on Saturday. A Bulldog 4x100-meter relay team placed second of five teams that finished the race, and was second only to an unattached team of professional runners. Additionally, junior Antonia Renker competed in the hammer throw.

    Bulldogs Head West to Start the Outdoor Season The Yale women’s track and field team traveled to California for a training trip over spring break this year, and they will wrap up the week’s workouts by competing in the Northridge Invitational, hosted by the California State University at Northridge. The meet will draw competitors from all over the country, especially those from Northern states where warm temperatures are harder to come by, including Alaska and Idaho.

    Marvin a Team-High Second at ECACs The Yale women's track and field team traveled to the ECAC Championship meet looking for a little redemption after placing eighth at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships on Feb. 25-26, and redemption is what they achieved. The Bulldogs compiled 20 points to finish in 14th place out of 50 teams and bested three other Ivy schools, including Heps champion Columbia. Cornell beat out University of Maryland Eastern Shore for the ECAC title by one point, finishing with 55 points to UMES' 54. Princeton was a distant third with 44 points and 2011 champion Connecticut was fourth with 36 points.
