Bulldogs Will Travel to Ithaca to Take on the Ancient Eight
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's track and field team will travel to Cornell this Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. This weekend's meet represents the culmination of the season for many Bulldogs, as only those who qualify to compete in the ECAC or NCAA championships can extend their season. The team has prepared all season long for this weekend's events, and has proved that it is ready after posting season-best performances in the last few meets.
The Bulldogs are hoping to best an eighth-place finish at last year's edition of Heps. Their strongest returning competitors were junior Nihal Kayali (third in the one mile run), senior captain Gabriella Kelly (eighth in the 400-meter dash) and junior Elizabeth Marvin (fifth in the 3,000-meter run). Each of these athletes continues to be competitive this season, with Kayali posting the second-fastest time in the Ivy League this year in the 1,000-meter run and Marvin holding the eighth-fastest Ivy time in the 5,000-meter run. Additionally, junior Annelies Gamble (eighth in the 800-meter run last season) has run the seventh-fastest time in the 800-meter run. Yale also claimed third place in the 4x800-meter relay.
This year, more depth in the field events should translate to more points picked up along the way as well. Sophomore Emily Urciuoli has cleared the fourth-highest distance in the pole vault in the League, and Yale has added a number of jumpers to the roster since last season.
The 2012 Ivy League Heptagonal Championships will get underway on Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. A full schedule and live results and blog of the meet is available here. Results will be posted on www.yalebulldogs.com at the conclusion of each day's events.
