First Foray onto the Outdoor Track for Many Bulldogs in 2012

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a trip to California kicked off the outdoor track season over spring break, the Yale women's track and field team will compete outdoors back east for the first time in 2012 on Mar. 31. The Bulldogs will compete against regional teams such as Brown, Hartford, Rhode Island, Southern Connecticut and the host Huskies in the UConn Spring Invite. Additionally, five members of the team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the national Raleigh Relays, sponsered by Adidas, from Mar. 30-31. The meets will be unscored, giving the team a chance to see how its training is progressing without worrying about a team score.

Only a limited number of Bulldogs participated in the team's opening meet in Northridge, Calif., on Mar. 17, so this weekend will offer an opportunity for athletes to compete in events that are contested exclusively outdoors. These events include the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the 400-meter hurdles and the hammer throw.

The UConn Spring Invitational will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the javelin throw. Field events will continue throughout the day, while track events start at 11:00 a.m. with the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Results will be posted on and when they are available.

The Raleigh Relays are hosted by North Carolina State University. Juniors Annelies Gamble and Nihal Kayali will compete in the 1,500-meter run at 6:25 p.m. on Friday and then will double-dip in the 800-meter run at 2:10 p.m. on Saturday. Freshman Kira Garry, junior Elizabeth Marvin and senior Lindsey Raymond will compete in the 10,000-meter run at 8:50 p.m. on Friday night. It will be the first time any of the three athletes has attempted the distance competitively. A full meet schedule is available here. Results will be available on and after each day's events.
