Bulldogs Host Brown in Ivy Opener

Bulldogs Begin Title Defense on Saturday

The Ivy League season begins this Saturday for the Bulldogs and their opponent, the Brown Bears.

After a 6-4 non-conference mark to open the season, Yale starts the defense of its 2010 Ivy League title on Saturday.  Yale swept both matches against Brown last year.

In its most recent match, the Bulldogs lost at Albany last Wednesday.  The Great Danes swept the Bulldogs, however two of the three sets went to extra points, including a 33-31 score in the first.

Freshmen continue to be major contributors for the Bulldogs.  Allie Frappier led the way at Albany with a double-double, including 13 digs and team-high 10 kills.

Mollie Rogers, also a freshman, was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week last Tuesday for her efforts last weekend at the Yale Classic.  Rogers, who has been named to the all-tournament team three times this season, tallied nine kills and nine digs.

Rogers and Frappier enter Saturday's match lead the team in kills.  Rogers ranks first with 117, while Frappier places second with 96.

Fellow freshman Maddie Rudnick paces the team in digs with 146, three more than Rogers who ranks second.

McHaney Carter, a sophomore, notched seven kills against the Great Danes after being named MVP of the Yale Classic.  The Bulldogs won all three matches – against New Hampshire, Quinnipiac and Army.

Senior captain Taylor Cramm posted six kills without an error against Albany and leads the team with a .393 hitting percentage.

On Oct. 1, 2010, the trio of Carter, Erica Reetz, Haley Wessels hit .400 or higher, while Bridget Hearst led a balanced Yale attack with a team-high 10 kills to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-18) victory over Brown in the conference opener for both teams in Providence.

The two teams played the following night in a closer match.  Wessels and Reetz both slammed 14 kills and each hit .355 for Yale in a 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 27-25, 15-8) victory.

The Bulldogs went on to compile a 12-2 record in conference play in 2010.

Brown (4-7) comes to New Haven following a 3-1 loss to Rhode Island on Sept. 21.  Freshman Maddie Lord, who earned conference rookie of the week honors on Sept. 6, had a match-high 17 kills and 11 digs for the Bears.
