Bulldogs to Compete in Third Straight NCAA Tournament
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The four-time defending Ivy League champion Yale volleyball team will face Utah of the Pac-12 Conference in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 5 p.m. in University Park, Pa.
The Bulldogs (20-4) will compete in the Lexington Region, with the first two rounds hosted by Penn State, the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament. The winner of the Yale-Utah match will face the winner of Penn State-LIU Brooklyn match on Saturday.
"We're very excited and honored to have earned a number-three seed in this year's Tournament," Yale head coach Erin Appleman said. "It also nice to go back to Penn State again this season and play in a gym that is familiar to us."
Yale played in University Park, Pa., at the Penn State Invitational earlier this season on Sept. 20-21. The Bulldogs defeated Eastern Kentucky and Albany, and lost to Penn State.
This marks the third straight season Yale will compete in the NCAA Tournament and the second straight year the Bulldogs have been seeded in a first-round match at Penn State. Last year, Yale dropped a five-setter to Bowling Green in the opening round.
The Utes finished the regular season 20-12 overall and 9-11 in Pac-12 Conference play, while being listed 26th in the latest NCAA RPI Rating.
Friday will mark the second ever meeting between Yale and Utah. The Utes defeated the Bulldogs, 3-1, on Sept. 3, 2011 in New Haven.
Yale completed the regular season with a five-match win streak, and won 14 of its last 15 matches.
