Bulldogs Finish Strong to Beat Cornell

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Three Bulldogs went for at least 10 kills to lead Yale to a 3-1 win over Cornell on Saturday evening.

The scores of the match were 20-25, 29-27, 25-22 and 25-22.  The Bulldogs improved to 4-1 in league play and 10-4 overall. 

Kathyrn Attar, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, went for a team-high 15 kills, hit .371 and added 13 digs for Yale. Izzy Simqu had 13 kills and Tristin Kott added 10.

Attar played a key role in the deciding set, and scored in three ways down the stretch.  She gave Yale an 18-17 lead with a kill, then tied the match at with a block assist with Simqu.  On the next point, Attar delivered a service ace between two backrow Cornell players.   

Cornell (6-8, 2-3 Ivy) scored the next two points before Yale went on one more run.  Kelley Wirth tied the set and then combined with Kate Aitkenhead (6 blocks) for a block assist to give Yale the lead.

After a Cornell attack error, Yurika Boyd ended the match with an error.  

The Big Red started fast and took the first set -- hitting .293.  Attar helped lift the Bulldogs in the second set that required extra points to win.  

Attar had five kills, including one that tied the set at 26 to hold off set point, and later broke a 27-all tie with another.  Kelsey Crawford's kill ended the set for Yale. 

Crawford finished with 20 assists and 13 digs.  Kate Swanson finished with a team-best 18 digs, while Megan Rasmussen had 14 digs and addd eight kills.

Kott and Attar both had four kills without an error on nine swings apiece to lead the Bulldogs in the third set.  Simqu had four kills on four swings.

Franny Arnautou had 26 assists and seven digs for the match. 

The Bulldogs next weekend take to the road for the first time this conference season.  Yale plays at Dartmouth on Friday and at Harvard on Saturday.

The Bulldogs kept pace in the Ivy standings and remain one match behind Princeton through five Ivy matches....Megan Rasmussen posted season highs in kills (8) and digs (14)...Izzy Simqu hit .545 on 22 swings to go along with 13 kills....Yale hit .419 in the fourth set with only two errors on 31 swings...Kate Aitkenhead had three blocks to spark the Bulldogs at the net in the second set...The third set had a tied score 12 times...Yale improved to 7-1 at home this season and will now play its next five matches on the road.
