NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Junior libero Kate Swanson was named captain of the Yale Volleyball team for the 2018 season, head coach Erin Appleman announced on Tuesday.

Swanson, who was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, led the conference in digs per set in 2017 as the Bulldogs won their sixth Ivy League title in the last eight seasons.  The Rancho Sante Fe, Calif., native was also selected to the All-Ivy First Team and averaged 5.43 digs per set against conference opponents.

"Kate is a great leader who cares a lot about the Yale Volleyball program," Appleman said.  "She has gained a lot of experience over the last three seasons to prepare her for this role.  The team will be in good hands with Kate's leadership."

Over her first three seasons, Swanson has accumulated 1,105 digs.  In each of her first three seasons, her digs per set average has increased from 3.76 digs in 2015 to 4.64 this past season.

"It is a huge honor especially after seeing the amazing captains that have come before me,"  Swanson said.  "It is a Yale tradition that I am very grateful to be a part of, especially coming off of an exciting season. The future of Yale Volleyball looks bright and I can't wait for us to get back on the court and keep getting better."

As a sophomore, Swanson was named to the All-Ivy Second Team and earned the Yale Volleyball Program's Coaches' Award.  She ranked fourth in the Ivy League and led team in digs per set (4.38).

In her rookie season, she appeared in all 24 matches and led Bulldogs in digs per set (3.76).  Swanson ranked fourth in digs per set in Ivy matches, posted 20 or more digs in six Ivy matches and led team in service aces (13) against conference opponents.

Prior to Yale, Swanson was named a 2014 First-Team Under Armour All-American and the 2014 Daily Prep Talk Libero of the Year.  She was a four-year starter at The Bishop's School, patrolled the backcourt to her school's CIF DII Championship in 2013, and was First Team All CIF in 2014.

As the starting libero for nationally-ranked Coast VBC, Swanson helped lead her team to 5th place in 17 Open at the 2014 USAV Junior Nationals.
