Fresh off their eighth Ivy title in 14 seasons, the Bulldogs open the 2018 season by hosting three matches of the Battle of Connecticut. Yale will face Fairfield, Quinnipiac and Central Connecticut State at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. The matches mark for the Bulldogs a series renewal against all three schools -- Fairfield (last played Yale in 2009), Central Connecticut (2006) and Quinnipiac (2011).
Battle of Connecticut
Yale, along with Central Connecticut State, Fairfield, Hartford, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac will all play three matches this week against in-state opponents. In the last three years, the Bulldogs are 7-2 against non-conference opponents in season-opening weekend matches.
Home Court Advantage
The Bulldogs continued their home success in 2017 and went 8-3 at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. Over the last five seasons at home, the Bulldogs are 44-9 overall and 32-4 against Ivy League teams.
Ivy League Preseason Media Poll
Yale earned three first-place votes and were picked to finish second this season in the conference's inaugural volleyball preseason media poll announced on Monday afternoon. See complete poll here.
Yale returns five All-Ivy selections, including the league's defensive player of the year (Kate Swanson) and rookie of the year (Kathryn Attar). Swanson and Attar both were also awarded spots on the first team. In addition, Frances Arnautou and Tristin Kott earned second-team honors, while Kelley Wirth was a honorable mention.
Swanson Named 2018 Captain
Senior libero Kate Swanson was named team captain for 2018. The Rancho Sante Fe, Calif., native was named 2017 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Ivy First Team. Over her first three seasons, Swanson has accumulated 1,105 digs. In each of her first three seasons, her digs per set average has increased from 3.76 digs in 2015 to 4.64 this past season.
Appleman Leads the Way
Yale head coach Erin Appleman enters her 16th season in New Haven with a 270-104 overall record at Yale with a 167-43 mark in the Ivy League. She is joined by associate head coach Kevin Laseau (15th season at Yale) and assistant coach Brendan McGourn (5th season at Yale).
The Bulldogs next weekend travel to the University of Rhode Island to compete in the Art Carmichael Invitational. Yale will face Army-West Point, New Hampshire and host URI.
