Annual Race Brings Competitive Spirit
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs will host fellow Ivy League schools Harvard and Princeton in the 34th annual Harvard-Yale-Princeton meet at home on Friday. Although both teams pose a challenge for the Bulldogs, head coach Mark Young '68, the Mark T. Young '68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field, said that the annual event has brought out some of the best performances in past years.
"Everybody always rises to the competition at this meet. It's very exciting because of all the history," Young said.
The Bulldogs will look to junior Anne Lovelace and freshman Elizabeth Marvin to lead the squad. Marvin was the Bulldogs' top runner at the season-opening Dartmouth Invitational, while Lovelace was second. Junior Jennifer Downing, the Bulldogs' third runner at Dartmouth, also looks strong. Last week's Quinnipiac Invitational highlighted freshman Clare Kane, who finished first for the Bulldogs in her first collegiate race, as well as fellow freshman Wendy DeWolf who finished second for the team. Senior Kate Grace will also race for Yale cross country for the first time this weekend after qualifying for NCAA Nationals and receiving All-American recognition in track and field. Other runners that may contribute include senior captain Liya Assefa, senior Celia Stockwell, juniors Jacque Sahlberg and Kristin Johnson, sophomore Phoebe Gaston and freshmen Sarah Barry and Melissa Chapman.
The Bulldogs face some tough competition, since the Tigers were fifth at NCAA Nationals last year and are currently ranked ninth in the nation, while Harvard is ranked fourth for the Northeast region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Crimson also won the dual meet against Yale last year. (The Tigers did not compete at the meet.) Nevertheless, the Bulldogs look forward to racing against both schools.
"We have struggled the past few years, but we are much improved. We will see just how much improved relative to those two teams on Friday," Young said.
The race will kick off at 4:15 p.m. Results will be posted on Yalebulldogs.com after the meet.
