Fordham Fiasco Kicks Off Cross Country Season
Team to Compete in Van Cortlandt Park
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's cross country team will start its season on Saturday when it travels to the storied Van Cortlandt Park in New York City to compete at the Fordham Fiasco meet. The team will get a chance to see how its summer preparation stacks up against regional teams, and to find out what it has to focus on going forward.
Senior captain Nihal Kayali commented that the team will use the meet as a transition back into racing after a long off-season. The freshmen will be able to get some experience racing for the team without the pressure of worrying about points or championship competition, which will come later in the season.
"Van Cortlandt Park is a familiar course for most people on the team, so it's a great place to focus on the execution of a controlled race plan where unknowns about course conditions won't play a factor," said Kayali.
The women's race will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will feature 22 teams, including Ivy foe Columbia, which placed a narrow second in last year's Ivy League Heptagonal Championships. The Lions are ranked eighth, three spots behind Yale's fifth in the Northeast region. Rowan University, ranked third in Atlantic region for Division III schools, is also scheduled to compete. Results will be available at http://www.fordhamsports.com/sports/m-xc/ and www.yalebulldogs.com following the race.
