Early Exposure to the Nation's Top 30
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On the heels of their first national ranking since 2005, the Yale women's cross country team will travel to the Midwest on Friday to compete in the fourth annual Wisconsin Adidas Invitational, a competitive meet that will draw 20 of the top 30 teams in the nation. 2012 marks the first year that the Bulldogs will compete in the invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
The Bulldogs will test their mettle against the best teams in the country on Friday, and try to improve on their national ranking in the process. The Wisconsin Adidas Invitational will be their only chance to compete against such a deep field before entering the championship season, which begins with the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships on Oct. 27. This year marks a first for the team, in that Yale does not usually enter such competitive meets until much later in the season at NCAA Regionals. By exposing her athletes to the rest of the top 30 this early in the year, coach Amy Gosztyla will try to get them ready for those championships where a lot more is at stake.
A mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen will represent Yale on Friday. Junior Millie Chapman, junior Liana Epstein and senior captain Nihal Kayali have all previously placed first on the team for the Bulldogs, and will vie for that opportunity again at Wisconsin. They will be joined by sophomore Kira Garry, senior Caitlin Hudson, senior Elizabeth Marvin and freshman Emily Stark, who have also been strong contributors throughout the season so far.
Among the teams competing are No. 2 Arizona, No. 3 Washington, No. 5 Iowa State and No. 7 Stanford. Strong contingents from the Ivy League (Brown, No. 9 Cornell, No. 23 Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard and Princeton) and the NCAA Northeast region (No. 21 Boston College, Connecticut, Iona, No. 28 Providence, Syracuse and No. 24 Villanova) will also be present.
The women's championship 6k race will start at noon, with the B 6k starting at 1:20 p.m. on Friday. The meet website, with course map and more information, is at http://www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-xc/adidas-Invitational-2012.html. Results will be posted on the meet website and at www.yalebulldogs.com.
