Yale Welcomes the Class of 2018

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Yale women's cross country and track and field teams welcome 15 rookie runners to their ranks this year, making this freshmen class the largest in recent memory. The incoming athletes will train under the leadership of 2014 cross country captain, senior Hannah Alpert and 2014-15 track and field captain, senior Kira Garry.

In addition to Garry, the 2014 cross country team will also look to juniors Elizabeth McDonald and Emily Stark. All three athletes had successful outdoor campaigns, with Garry and Stark qualifying for the first round of the NCAA Championships. Sophomores Chandler Olson, Meredith Rizzo and Emily Waligurski, as well as seniors Hannah Alpert and Anna Demaree competed with the team's best at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships and the NCAA Regional meets. They will return as key athletes for the team's success. The Bulldogs will look to further their standing in both the Ivy League and the Northeast Region by relying on this strong core of returning athletes in addition to the freshmen class.

Incoming athletes who had success in high school cross country and could make an immediate impact this fall include freshmen Clare Carroll, Claire Ewing-Nelson, Melissa Fairchild, Samantha Glass, Sarah Healy, Sofia Kane, Dana Klein and Kelli Reagan.

"I'm really excited about this incoming class of athletes," said Head Women's Cross Country Coach Amy Gosztyla. "It is the largest group of distance runners we've added to the program since my arrival. They will provide great depth to our front runners this fall and I believe they have the ability to help move us up the ranks in the Ivy League immediately."

In the spring, the track and field team will look to school record holders and seniors Emily Cable (400-meter dash) and Garry (3,000-meter steeplechase), in addition to junior Karleh Wilson (shot put) to continue its success. Junior Taylor Eldridge and freshman Kate Simon will also be valuable contributors in the throws, while senior Alicia Jordan will continue to excel as the team's star jumper. Senior Elle Brunsdale returns to compete as a multi-athlete in the heptathlon and pentathlon. In addition, junior hurdler Mackenzie Mathews and middle distance competitors, junior Shannon McDonnell and sophomores Delaney FitzPatrick and Frances Schmiede will provide depth for the program on the track. The Bulldogs welcome freshman Carolina Bowe, who enters the program as a short sprinter.

Many of the same incoming cross country athletes also have the ability to make an impact on the track. Incoming freshmen athletes such as Calleigh Higgins, Shelby Mauchaline, Katherine Raphael and Han-ah Sumner will shine during the track and field season in the middle-distance events.
