NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- On Monday, three Bulldogs were recognized for their high finishes at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. Andrea Masterson earned this distinction for the third consecutive year while Kayley DeLay and Morgan McCormick earned it for the first year.
The USTFCCCA awarded athletes All-Region recognition based on their performances at their regional competition. Nationwide, a total of 225 athletes are recognized out of all athletes from the nine regions. To earn the honor, the athletes must finish in the top 25.
To have three athletes awarded out of the entire pool of NCAA Division I athletes is quite an accomplishment.
Masterson earned the distinction for her sixth-place finish on Friday. Since 2016, she has earned this honor and steadily improved on her performance each year, moving up from 25th to 6th place over the two years. She will be someone to watch for this weekend as she returns to the NCAA National Championship to cap off her most successful season yet.
In her debut regional competition, first-year McCormick earned herself All-Region distinction for her 12th place finish. From her first competition as a Yale athlete, McCormick established herself as an integral member of the varsity squad and continued to be a consistent point scorer for the Bulldogs. Her future in Yale cross country is bright, especially when considering she was the top first-year finisher at Northeast Regionals.
Having narrowly missed All-Region honors last year, sophomore DeLay came back to the competition with a vengeance. DeLay moved up a remarkable 14 spots during the closing 3k of the race to cross the line in 20th place. Although her season has concluded, she will be an athlete to watch heading into the track season having completed her best ever cross country season with All-Ivy and All-Region honors.
While their cross country seasons have concluded, the future for Yale cross country is bright as McCormick and DeLay will return for the Bulldogs next year. In the meantime, Masterson will travel to Madison, Wis. to compete at her third NCAA National Championship. Coming off an Ivy League title and a solid performance this past weekend, Masterson should take confidence in her endurance, patience, and grit heading into the weekend.
