Brian McNary twice in the first period and his squad never relinquished the lead as the Brown men's hockey team skated past Yale 5-2 before 1,399 at Meehan Auditorium.

The Bears (1-3-1) earned their first win of the year by going in front 3-0 early in the second period only to see the Bulldogs (0-6) fight back to 3-2 after power-play goals by Joe Zappala (his first) and Christian Jensen (2nd) in the final frame.

An even-strength goal by Mike Meech at 17:37 put the game away and the home team added an empty-netter at 18:20 to make first-time starter Kevin Kliman (21 saves) a winner in goal.

Brown outshot Yale 37-23 while Josh Gartner made 32 saves. The junior goalie has picked up the loss in all six games this season.

The Elis had their chances on the power play but converted just two of seven, while the Bears went 1-for-5.

Yale returns to Ingalls Rink on Friday and Saturday to face Rensselaer and Union in a pair of 7 p.m. games.
