NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale men's soccer team erupted for four
goals in Saturday's thrilling victory over Cornell. The Bulldogs'
offense may get a tougher test on Tuesday night against UConn. The
Huskies have allowed only six goals in their 13 games. Kickoff at
Reese Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
Yale (4-5-3) was outstanding on free kicks in Saturday's win
over the Big Red, scoring three goals in that manner, including the
two in the final five minutes of the second half. Andrew Shorten
headed in Milan Tica's serve to tie the score, and Tica lofted a
ball into the box that resulted in Chris Dennen's winning goal. It
was the first goal of the season for Dennen, who was named to this
week's Ivy League Honor Roll.
UConn (8-2-3) is unbeaten in its last seven games. The Huskies
were ranked 17th in the nation by the NSCAA last week
but figure to move up after knocking off sixth-ranked Harvard 4-0
and Pittsburgh 2-0. Freshman Carlos Alvarez was named the
TopDrawerSoccer.com Player of the Week after registering seven
points in two wins last week. Against Harvard he scored two goals
and added an assist.
Yale and UConn are playing for the fourth straight year. The two
teams played a scoreless tie in Storrs last year. Travis Chulick
made six saves to earn the shutout in goal for the Bulldogs. The
Huskies lead the all-time series 31-27-4.
