Box Score Kevin Peterson, Andy Hackbarth Score For Yale
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Freshman Kevin Peterson made the most of
his first career appearance for the Yale men's soccer team.
Peterson's goal in the 77th minute snapped a scoreless tie and
helped the Bulldogs to a 2-0 road victory over Central Connecticut
on Wednesday afternoon. Andy Hackbarth also scored on a penalty
kick with less than three minutes remaining.
"This was our best performance of the season against a team that
had been undefeated," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins.
The victory was the first of the season for the Bulldogs, who
improved to 1-1-2.
The first goal of the game came when Jon Carlos received a
through ball down the right side. He fed a ball across the
box to Peterson, who fired a shot past Central goalkeeper Paul
Armstrong.
"Kevin really made a difference when he came into the game,"
Tompkins said.
Yale's second goal came after a takedown in the box. Hackbarth
stepped up and banged the penalty kick into the back of the net to
seal the victory.
"In the second half I thought we played really well," Tompkins
said. "We started to move the ball nicely."
Goalkeeper Travis Chulick made four saves to post the shutout,
his first of the season. His best stop came when he got a piece of
an Eddie Floyd blast that appeared to be headed into the lower
right corner of the net.
Yale's defense also did a good job of containing Taylor Morgan,
Central's dangerous freshman forward.
"He's a handful, but I thought we defended him well," Tompkins
said.
The Blue Devils (3-1) outshot Yale 16-13, but the Bulldogs had a
decisive 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
Yale is back in action on Saturday, hosting St. Francis, NY.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
