No. 19 Cornell Beats Yale 4-0 to Extend Winning Streak

Box Score

Schlesier Makes 11 Saves

ITHACA, N.Y. – No. 19 Cornell extended its winning streak to seven games Saturday at Marsha Dodson Field, beating the Yale field hockey team 4-0. Senior goalkeeper Heather Schlesier made 11 saves for the Bulldogs.

The Big Red had some added incentive heading into the game thanks to Columbia's 3-2 win vs. Princeton Friday night in New York. That left both the Lions and the Tigers at 2-1 in the league, meaning Cornell had a chance to grab a one-game lead in the Ivy standings on Saturday.

Cornell (8-1, 3-0 Ivy League) started seizing that opportunity quickly. The Big Red cashed in on its first penalty corner of the game, with back/midfielder Sam McILwrick scoring to give the Big Red a quick 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. That set the tone for a day in which Cornell got 13 corners and Yale got none.

The Big Red scored again on a corner with time expired in the first half, as forward Krysten Mayers knocked in the rebound after a shot by back Marisa Siergiej was blocked.

Siergiej added a goal on a penalty stroke at 48:46, her 10th goal of the year -- two more than any other player in the league.

Katie Garrity tacked on another goal with 3:20 remaining to make the score 4-0. Big Red goalkeeper Elizabeth Schaeffler made one save for the shutout, Cornell's fourth of the season.

Yale (1-8, 0-3 Ivy League) returns to Johnson Field to host Bryant on Wednesday night.
