Bulldogs Win 13 Matches on the Day, Bringing Combined Weekend Record to 27-4
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The second and final day of the Yale Shootout saw the Bulldogs finish off a highly successful tournament. Playing at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, the Elis completed an undefeated set of matches against St. Bonaventure, and then won all but two singles matches against Bryant. In the end, Yale added 13 wins to Saturday's 14 victories to bring the weekend's combined win-loss record to an impressive 27-4.
Sunday's action began with Yale's players taking on St. Bonaventure in doubles. The Bulldogs had gone undefeated against the Bonnies in singles on Saturday, and they picked up where they left off, winning all four doubles clashes. Players from all four classes of the Yale team contributed. Freshman Stefan Doehler and junior Martin Svenning defeated Andrew Blair and Eduardo Irizarry 8-2, while sophomores Alex Hagermoser and Photos Photiades rolled to an 8-1 win over Victor Blanco and Hector Martinez. The veteran duo of seniors Daniel Faierman and Matt Saiontz recorded an 8-3 triumph, and junior Jason Brown teamed up with freshman Ziqi Wang to notch a hard-fought 8-5 win.
Yale's sterling performances against Army and St. Bonaventure carried over into the squad's matches against Bryant. Singles competition against Bryant's players produced several scintillating encounters, with three matches going the distance. Photiades won one of those three-set matches, generating a comeback to complete a strong 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jorge Ortiz-Garcia. Saiontz and senior captain Zachary Krumholz used their experience to post wins, and Doehler and Wang showcased their talent en route to straight-set victories.
The Bulldogs finished their weekend with four doubles matches against Bryant. Sophomore Tyler Lu took part in the action alongside Faierman to notch a tough 8-6 win over Zachary Morris and Max Vogt. The duo of Doehler and Svenning picked up its second win of the day, as did the sophomore tandem of Hagermoser and Photiades. Saiontz and Wang also teamed up to record a win for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will aim to build on their confidence-boosting display at the Yale Shootout when they next take to the court on Thursday, Oct. 16, for the start of the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
