Box Score Wagner Scores For Bulldogs
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Fairleigh Dickinson has quietly built a pretty formidable soccer reputation over the years. The Knights have made six NCAA Tournament appearances under long-time head coach Seth Roland. The 2014 season hasn't quite started on the right foot, but the Knights seem to rounding into form just in time for the start of Northeast Conference play. That's certainly how it looked Tuesday night at Reese Stadium.
Enver Caymaz scored twice as FDU knocked off Yale 3-1 on an overcast and chilly night.
Mitch Wagner had the Yale goal.
Caymaz opened the scoring at 13:32 when he made a couple of nifty moves at the top of the box before firing a hard shot just inside the post.
Yale goalkeeper Ryan Simpson made a couple of nice saves to deny FDU, and it looked like the Bulldogs might make it to halftime just down one.
A turnover by the Bulldogs, though, late in the half led to a 2-on-1 for the Knights, and Leo Saiti drilled home a feed from Itai Erez with 3:35 left to make it 2-0.
Yale (0-6-2) turned up the pressure a bit in the second half and had a couple of opportunities to pull within one but couldn't capitalize.
Caymaz then sealed the win for FDU when he outraced the Yale defense to catch up to a long feed from Miguel Escobar, broke in alone and scored on the breakaway.
The Bulldogs avoided the shutout with less than 10 minutes left. Lukas Czinger fired a shot that deflected off an FDU defender right to Wagner, who kicked it in from 15 yards out.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Knights (2-7-1).
Yale had an 11-9 edge in corner kicks, but FDU outshot the Bulldogs 20-9.
Yale opens Ivy League play on Saturday at Harvard. Kickoff is Cambridge is slated for 7 p.m.
