Amos and Hamilton Emerge with Doubles Win
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Yale women's tennis team faced a tough test in its opening match of the 2015 regular season on Saturday, as the squad took on No. 16 Michigan as part of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend. Playing on their opponent's home turf, the Bulldogs offered resistance but ultimately succumbed to the host team 4-0.
The match began on even terms, with Michigan and Yale trading victories in doubles play. The Wolverines got on the board first when the No. 35-ranked duo of Sarah Lee and Ronit Yurovsky overcame the Bulldog tandem of freshman Carol Finke and sophomore Sherry Li by a score of 6-1. Yale responded with a win at No. 3 doubles. The all-junior team of Courtney Amos and Madeleine Hamilton eased to a 6-1 triumph over the Michigan pair of Mira Ruder-Hook and Annie Wierda. In the end, however, Michigan secured the doubles point when the No. 10-ranked Michigan tandem of Emina Bektas and Alex Najarian defeated Yale's top duo of junior Ree Ree Li and senior captain Hanna Yu 6-2.
With the doubles point in hand, Michigan, whose squad features three top-40 singles players, then notched three wins in singles before the Bulldogs could record a point. In a contest of nationally-ranked players, No. 16 Bektas of Michigan upended No. 96 Yu, 6-1, 6-0. The Wolverines also secured wins at No. 6 and No. 3 singles.
The remaining three singles matches were abandoned since Michigan had clinched the overall victory, but Sherry Li had won the opening set of her match at No. 5 singles against Ruder-Hook.

The Bulldogs will return on Sunday to Michigan's courts for a 10:00 a.m. consolation match against either No. 26 Tulsa or No. 42 Utah. Tulsa and Utah were scheduled to play later in the day on Saturday. The winner of that match will meet Michigan on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with a spot in the National Team Indoor Championships on the line, while the defeated team will take on Yale.
