Box Score Ferrara Scores Yale Goal in 6-1 Loss
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Yale women's ice hockey team caught No. 4 Harvard at a bad time Friday night at Bright-Landry Hockey Center. The Crimson had just racked up nine goals Tuesday night against No. 6 BU, and that offensive momentum carried over to give Harvard a 6-1 win over Yale. Junior forward Janelle Ferrara scored the Bulldogs' lone goal. Forward Lyndsey Fry had a hat trick for the Crimson.
Yale hit a couple of rough patches in the first period, allowing a power play goal 3:10 into the game (by forward Miye D'Oench) and another goal at 17:57 (by Fry) that deflected in off a Yale skate. That gave Harvard (17-4-2, 13-3-1 ECAC Hockey) a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
After defenseman Sarah Edney slipped a backhander from the right circle past Yale senior goaltender Jaimie Leonoff at 4:52 of the second, Harvard had a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs answered on a power play three minutes later, with Ferrara redirecting a shot from the right circle by sophomore forward Krista Yip-Chuck that was set up by senior defenseman Aurora Kennedy.
But Harvard seized control of the game with two goals from Fry in the final 6:05 of the second. The first came on a rebound after a series of saves by Leonoff. After killing off a Yale 5-on-3 later in the period, Harvard got another goal on a rebound from Fry with just 57.9 seconds left in the period. That gave the Crimson a 5-1 edge heading into the third.
Sophomore Hanna Mandl came on in relief of Leonoff (17 saves) for the third period. The Crimson scored another goal off a Yale player at the 2:47 mark, with D'Oench getting the credit. That made the final 6-1.
Brianna Laing finished with 20 saves for Harvard. Mandl made 12 in her 20 minutes of work.
Yale (10-13-1, 7-10-0 ECAC Hockey) plays at Dartmouth Saturday afternoon.
