Finke and Sherry Li Post Win in Doubles
AUSTIN, Texas – The Yale women's tennis team experienced a tough start to its spring break trip to the Lone Star State, as No. 54 Texas defeated the Yale squad 4-0 on Tuesday. Playing at the Longhorns' Caswell Tennis Center, the home team secured the doubles point before notching three singles victories to complete the sweep.
Despite entering the match as the underdog, Yale appeared primed for the occasion from the outset, as the Bulldog duo of freshman Carol Finke and sophomore Sherry Li posted the first victory of the encounter at No. 3 doubles, upending the Longhorn tandem of Lana Groenvynck and Pippa Horn 6-3. Texas rebounded, however, with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to claim the doubles point and gain the early advantage.
Texas refused to relinquish the momentum, securing three relatively straightforward wins in singles play to clinch the overall victory. At No. 5 singles, Danielle Wagland defeated Sherry Li 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 1 spot, Breaunna Addison, ranked No. 49 in the nation, overcame Yale senior captain Hanna Yu 6-3, 6-2 to put the Longhorns within one point of victory. Lina Padegimaite then clinched at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win over freshman Valerie Shklover.
In addition to the triumph at No. 3 doubles, another bright spot for Yale was a top-notch performance from junior Courtney Amos at No. 4 singles. Amos was in a commanding position against Pippa Horn when Texas completed the win, as she held a 6-4, 4-0 lead.
The Bulldogs will now travel to Houston for a pair of matches against Rice and William & Mary. Yale will seek its first away win of the season when it takes to the court to face Rice on Friday at 12:00 p.m. CDT (1:00 p.m. EDT). The match will take place at Rice's George R. Brown Tennis Center.
